Questions
Which countries in Central and South-East Europe need a vignette?
Routava covers the nine that do: Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Switzerland, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova. In six of them the vignette is for motorways and expressways; in Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova it is needed on every main road from the border.
Is a vignette the same as a toll?
A vignette is a time-based charge: you pay once for a day, ten days, a month or a year and drive as much as you like. Tolls by distance (Austria's tunnels, Italy's motorways) are separate and Routava does not cover them.
How do I know whether my car has one?
Add the car in Routava: it asks each country's register, or a vignette seller that reads it, and shows every vignette with its last day. Where nobody can say, it says so and warns you as if there were none.
Can I drive on ordinary roads without a vignette?
In Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Switzerland, yes: only motorways and expressways need one, and Routava warns only on those. In Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova the vignette is needed from the border on every main road.
